LibGuide Author

Nora Gaines is Acquisitions & Electronic Reserves Librarian at the Bank Street College of Education Library.

Nora's guides Resources for Families of Children of Incarcerated Parents and Resources for Families of Gender-Variant and Transgender Children  provide excellent resources for scholars, parents and teachers.

How long have you been making LibGuides?
A little over a year.

How long have you been a librarian?
20 years.

Where do you look to find LibGuide inspiration?
These were two communities of children whose challenges and experiences touched me deeply - their lives and difficulties were the inspiration for gathering and organizing the best resources I could find.  It was the remarkable New York Times Magazine article, "About a Boy Who Isn't," that first made me aware of transgender children and their families, and inspired my first LibGuide.

What are some tips you would like to share with others who might be copying your guide?
Talk to faculty and others in your community who have knowledge of the subject and the population, and ask for referrals and leads to local programs and institutions, to local experts, families, services and resources.  Read the parents' blogs!

What is your favorite thing about LibGuides?
That it gives us a flexible and esthetically pleasing platform for organizing and presenting resources in such a range of subject areas.
