LibGuide Author

Meet Louise Hilton - Librarian at East Baton Rouge Parish Library

How long have you been making LibGuides?

I started working on LibGuides at the end of 2011.

How long have you been a librarian?

I earned my MLIS in 2009 and my MALA in 2011 from Louisiana State University.

Where did you find inspiration for your Teen Guide?

First, I decided on the different categories I wanted to cover in the guide, keeping in mind what is relevant and useful and of course, interesting, to teens today. Once I picked the major topics (gaming, crafts, health & wellness, fashion, etc.), I went online for inspiration in those categories, looking at everything from the websites of popular teen publications to local events and resources our teen patrons might find useful.

What are some tips you would like to share with others who might be copying your guide?

Remember that you can always alter the Just for Teens guide to fit your particular library system's needs. Talk to your Teen librarians to see what events and resources are particularly popular and highlight similar resources on the guide to keep it fresh and relevant.

Anything else you want to add?

Have fun with it! Get the word out about your library's InfoGuides - some patrons won't even know they exist - by printing fun flyers with just the website and a blurb perhaps and hand them out at the Teen desk or at different Teen events. Ask for feedback from your teens and other patrons as well and then you can add to or adjust your guides according to your patrons' needs and interests.

What is your favorite thing about LibGuides?

My favorite thing about LibGuiding is being able to promote library usage by creating visually appealing guides on various topics while engaging and informing our patrons about our library’s resources and programs. Making LibGuides is definitely one of my favorite parts of the job.
